Easter Sunday 4th April 2010

Dear Parishioners & Visitors,

Welcome to you all at Easter as celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.  No longer does the Passover mean the escape from Egypt under Moses but rather the journey of all God’s children from baptism through life and death to eternal life, which we can rightfully call home.  Frank Sinatra (who got a splendid send off as a Catholic), in his hit song “My Way” expresses what many of us try to do often during life, but it ends (or starts) with the final curtain!  Jesus does not end his life on Calvary, but appears again to Mary and the disciples to fulfil all he had said.  He is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia as he said.

Those are not easy times to be known as a Catholic.  When disastrous scandals happen far away “we are shocked”  but we quickly become used to scandal and hardened to it.  Its a dreadful admission but the “far away” does it.  However when it is near home, things look and feel different.  The shame is that this is a massive self inflicted wound by many on the children and families who trusted them.  It calls us to look again at what we call “church” and not to take anything far granted.  The call of Jesus is to each person, faithfulness to the Lord and his message.  Two points to remember: 1) We all fail in more ways than one and over a period of time, ie, we are sinners.  2) Some will fail disastrously, (use any definition/image you wish).  How we address systemic failure is the true test of how we understand the call of Jesus in our time.
