5th Sunday of the Year

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

Jesus expresses words we are all familiar with from hymns and Sacred Scripture Readings, “ Do not be afraid...”. Is it enough to say it often and fear will leave us? We are given a glimpse of what our reaction would be to meeting God. It is presented in the form of a dream in the first reading today, which has an account of the splendour of “the Lord of hosts” and a sharp awareness of “the wretched state I am in” (Isaiah). This latter feeling leads to a vision of despair and the self imposed judgement that “I am lost”. Fortunately one of the angels comes to the rescue and brings the sign and message of forgiveness. So, Isaiah now hears the voice of God calling out to all who are listening;”Whom shall I send? Who will be my messengers?” And he answered, “Here I am, send me”. This was a dream, the interpretation of so much in our lives, even the apostles who were frightened by the haul of fish having said it would be a waste of time trying. Today and every day he asks the same question, whom shall I send, who will be my messengers? What is our answer?
