28th February 2010, 2nd Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners and Visitors, That event which we hear about in today’s Gospel called the Transfiguration of Jesus is a wonderful reminder to all of us that God is very near, but we don’t see Him as we do not expect to meet Him.

What happened on the mountain? Was it a vision? Was it a deep religious experience? Does it matter? Jesus had just corrected Peter’s idea of who he was (ie some say John the Baptist, some Elijah etc) when he told him that he must go up to Jerusalem, suffer, die and on the third day rise again (Luke 9:22).

The continuity of the Exodus (liberation of the people) under Moses would now be completed by Jesus, because by his death and resurrection all mankind would be set free from the bondage of sin. Peter did not get it and his response was “. . .Let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah”. - we are told “he die not know what he was saying”. To do what Peter suggested would have put all three on an equal footing. Thus the voice of the Father which was not heard by the bystanders at Jesus Baptism was now heard to say, “This is my Son, the Chosen One, Listen to him”. God’s Son turned up in a strage place.

Where do we expect to find (meet) him?
