22nd August - Feast of Our Lady Queen of Heaven

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady Queen of Heaven. Again like the Feast of the Assumption last week, there is no reference to this in Sacred Scripture. But it is a title given to Mary after the Council of Ephesus in 431, when Mary was declared THEOTOKOS or mother of God as she bore Jesus in pregnancy and gave birth to Him. This honouring of Mary is shared by many Anglicans and the Eastern Orthodox Church. You will be well aware also that one of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary is entitled the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This is a human expression of our esteem for Mary. As today’s gospel says, God intervened in Mary’s life so that the blessings of Heaven would come upon His sons and daughters through adoption for His kind purposes (2nd Reading today). Mary is an essential link in the chain of God’s love for us as he planned it.

Father John
