Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Today we ask: what is Christ the King of?
Pilate found himself asking the same question as Jesus was handed over to him. “Are you the King of the Jews?” There were many kings in the surrounding countries, so Pilate would have no difficultly with the role. However the idea of territorial kingship and kingdom which was Pilate’s natural understanding was not the kingship or kingdom we celebrate today.
As Jesus said: “My kingdom is not of this world.” A little further on in the dialogue between Pilate and Jesus, Pilate would ask: “What is the truth?” Now a clear separation occurs between the thinking of Jesus and Pilate.
It is not therefore a question of truth about the land, the territory or the people (the Jews), but the truth about the meaning of life, love, mercy, peace, forgiveness, justice, peace, life and death, even God. Those who are attuned to this truth listen to his voice.
God Bless, Fr John
